Honda Kills NSX Replacement

Banzai burned? Honda reportedly kills confirms NSX is DOA - Autoblog

Amidst a troubled global economy, Honda is actively scaling back its operations, and its performance programs are sadly bearing the brunt. After canceling its participation in Formula One and the AMA motorbike road racing series, the Japanese automaker has reportedly announced that it is nixing development of the next-generation NSX supercar.

The unfortunate news will undoubtedly come as a stunning disappointment for the loyal legions of Honda/Acura sportscar fans. The new NSX, which looked to be nearing the end of its development on the road to production, was slated to be the most powerful car ever made by Honda, driven by an anticipated 560-horsepower V10.

According to Autocar, the goal-line audible came from none other than Takeo Fukui, Honda's CEO, who dropped the bombshell as part of a end-of-year speech to the troops. The news also means that Honda is suspending plans to finally bring the Acura nameplate to Japan, and it also calls into doubt the fate of the V10 engine itself, as well as any long-rumored V8 powertrains.

Honda hasn't ruled out the possibility of picking up where it left off once business is back in order, but in the meantime the original NSX, which ceased production in 2005 after fifteen years on the market, will have to remain without an heir.

Update: Acura spokesman Mike Spencer has confirmed to Autoblog that the NSX has indeed been canceled. We'll now never know how good it might have been.

Smart business call on the part of the Honda leadership. As were noticing, the Financial impact of the recent bank failures and the credit "freeze" that plagues the US currently has a trickle down effect across the GLOBE. Do I think that this is the last we will see/hear of the Next Gen NSX. Looking at Honda's historical desire to raise the bar in motor sports, It's a safe presumption that the NSX will resurface in the future. Hopefully Sooner then later...

as much as it pains me to agree... i have to say i feel the same way. Looking at it as a business move, trying to push a new platform vehicle with no real testing as far as how it will do in todays market would be suicide. people looking for high horsepower will stay loyal to their european classics like porsche, and audi, the italian duo, etc... Although i do feel Honda/Acura did wait too long to make this critical decision, spending so much on the R&D of this vehicle. My question is do you think they will be pushing out any lower end stock turbo units to hit the markets they need to focus on? I feel that is where they need to spend their money.

R.I.P. NSX you will be remembered.

We'll just wait for better times.

Maybe when I grow up and be rich, they'll make it and I'll be able to purchase one.

Anybody in the sales field know that if it's not a necessity, it's sales will suffer with these times. I believe in the case of vehicles, some 80% or more don't even own their car. Loans and financing are going to much harder so acquiring one of these bad boys would be tough without a cash payment in full. Smart move +1, I agree with most all statements made above in this case. I do believe we will see more of this car in the future, you can count on that.

It sucks that honda quit the NSX project but I guess it's nessesary if they want to help themselves. Just hope that they dont cancel a certain New "retro" project as well.

Those types of comments would definitely have any auto manufacturer think about releasing a high end sports car in this economic climate. People would love to "see" the new NSX. But Honda wants to sells vehicles not just put them on display. So I support the delay of the NSX.
