http://www.themustangnews.com/carnew...6-66gt350h.htm In 1966, the Shelby GT-350 Mustang entered the rental car fleet creating another story in Mustang’s mystical journey. Well back then it wasn’t quite like that. It was just business. The idea was hatched as a brilliant marketing scheme to get the Shelby Mustangs out in front of John Q. Public, but also to sell more Shelbys. Carroll’s staff did their homework and found out that John Hertz had started his rental car business in 1925 with cars that all had a black and gold paint scheme. To make their presentation to the Hertz rental car agency, they built a black prototype GT-350 with gold stripes and flew it to New York City to show them. It was a hit and the company initially ordered 200 cars. The following month, an order for an additional 800 was placed, but total production was only 936. This was about 40% of Shelby Mustang production for 1966. The majority of the 1966 Shelby GT-350H cars were built with the 3-speed automatic C4 transmission. It seems that wires were crossed somewhere in the ordering process initially causing them to build the first 85 cars with 4-speed manuals. While 825 of the cars were built in Raven Black, other mishaps in ordering resulted in a number of cars being built in Wimbledon White, Guardsman Blue, Ivy Green, Candy Apple Red. All cars however had Gold Bronze stripes. Some changes were made for the 1966 Shelby GT-350H over the standard GT-350 to make the cars more palatable for the average consumer who would rent them. Speedometer cable locks were installed to prevent mileage tampering and softer brake systems made driving a bit easier. The cars still had the Shelby SCCA approved racing style front seat belts, but the H cars all had rear seats and standard belts instead of the delete panel. Also most of the cars came with the Ford Mustang deluxe wood-grain steering wheel instead of the Shelby wood racing model. The GT-350H did come equipped with the 306 horsepower version of the Hi-Po 289 though, so performance was still searing for a rental car. 0-60 times were about 6.6 seconds, which was blazing in the 1960’s. Like most Shelby GT-350’s in 1966 they had the plastic rear windows, steel hoods, rear exhaust, and no longer had Detroit Locker rear axles. The absence of the latter item was probably a good thing. Anyone who has driven a Detroit Locker car knows the chattering noises and jittery motions from the rear axle can be unnerving at first. The Shelby GT-350H rented for $13-17 a day. Hertz advertised the cars in travel magazines and airports of the larger cities and locations where affluent tourists would be. The cars are full of lore and legend about being rented and raced, hence the term “Rent-A-Racer”. Many stories and tales have been told. There was a racer who mildly trashed the engine in his own Shelby GT-350 race car at a weekend event. It is said that he rented a GT-350H and swapped motors for the race, returning the rental car with a slight rod-knock. Other stories have involved weekend gymkhanas and drag racing episodes. While it is hard to really ever know how much of it is true, one thing is certain. The Shelby GT- 350H is a car with a magical history. Now on the 40th Anniversary of the GT-350H, Ford, Shelby, and Hertz have once again conspired to build just under 1000 black and gold Mustangs for the rental fleet. We couldn’t be more excited!
