F-MAX Turbo vs Greddy Turbo vs Others!??!

Um, which is better? The F-Max Turbo for a 1999 Honda Civic Si (EX in the USA)?

I know that the dyno charts for the F-Max turbo shows that i can put out over 200 WHP..

i was told that the greddy doesn't put out much and is virtually worthless when it comes to the SOHC cam engines.

Another option i was told was to do a totally custom turbo. Get a Eagle Talon Turbo and go from there..

What does everyone think/use on there SOHC civic's?? Like is 170 whp good? or is that not good enough..

170 at the wheels for a S-motor is damn fine. i will always suggest a custom set up, but if $$$ is a concern, go with an "out the box" kit. read the previous posts on turbo options. a t-25 or even a t-3 turbo would be fine. anything larger, you will have major "lag" on the set up.

a used kit would really depend on the condition. the things to really look closely at is the exhaust manifold, make sure there are no cracks. and the turbo itself. spin the blade and it should spin freely without any play or noises. check the turbo housing so there arent any cracks where the turbo would bolt up to the manifold.

So online buying of a used Greddy woudlnt' be a wise decision then right? because i don't have access to see the product unless it's at my house or i see it in person, but if i get it online, it's kind of hard to see it.

another thing is can i upgrade the turbo at a later time? Or is it virtually like here's ur turbo and if u want a new turbo, just buy a new system?

never buy a used turbine without inspection unless you got it for like $20. if you want to upgrade to a larger turbo such as a t4, then you will have to replace the exhaust manifold. t-25,t-3 & t3/t4 hybrids, are all bolt-on to the same manifold since the share the same size inlet.

Hmm...so ur saying that I should:

a) Find a used turbo and look at it in person,

b) Buy a brand new turbo if i can't find one and inspect it?

pretty much. unless you know the seller of the used turbo, i wouldnt just buy it. chances are, there might be a flaw that could make the turbo useless.

just spend the extra $$$ and buy a new turbine. never go cheap on important parts such as the turbo itself.

best of luck.

you can get the SOHC greddy kit for around 1200-1500 anywhere. The reason that F-MAX's kit makes more is because of the intercooler they use...and they run a little more boost. thats all.

If you want to do a good setup...go check out:

greddy uses a smaller turbine than FMAX. also, the greddy kit doesnt come with as many parts as a FMAX or DRAG kit does.

I was covering the basics....yes the f-max does come with more....but its not worth it for the price that you would pay. I would rather upgrade a greddy turbo than buy an f-max.....

if someone has the knowledge a custom kit would be much better if you know what you are doing....
