JDM CRX Front End Info

Here is what i hope is a helpful guide about installing a JDM CRX Front End on your USDM CRX (and only CRX, the EF9 Front End is different)

Here are the parts required for a SiR Front (EF8) Conversion:
SiR hood
SiR headlamps
Front Bumper cover
Bumper lights

*YOU DO NOT NEED THE JDM FENDERS, CORNER LIGHTS, OR RAD SUPPORT*

The USDM and JDM fenders fit the same, the corner lights are the same (except for clear to amber) and unlike what most people tell you, the rad support is not the magic fix for this install. most rad supports come with an EF8 kit, but its not shaped any different than the USDM. the only difference is the hole for where the OEM intake went.

here is my How-To on this install EF8 Hood Latch install

SiR hood has larger openings for the SiR headlights, which are wider than USDM. the bumper cover also has the larger openings for the wider SiR headlamps. and the JDM bumper lights wrap around the sides, unlike USDM.

Also, this is install is only for the SiR parts. ZC parts are also different.

I will post more info as I obtain it or as you have more questions

Thanks for the info!

I was going to ask you too if the USDM corners can be used, since my boyfriend bought me brand new amber corners a couple of months ago

nice write up!

What I am wondering about is the front bumper support. Can you explain more about what is involved with that? I hear you must remove it and/or cut it.

Please let us know.

Thanks,
james

thanks man.

sure. the USDM rad support and JDM rad support are EXACTLY the same except that the JDM one has a cut out for where the stock intake would go. (see pic below)

other than that they are the same shape and size. the front cross support is out further on a SiR than a USDM CRX Si. which causes the SiR hood to not latch up correctly

so my how-to explains how to modify to get the hood to latch properly. and the How-to can be used for either rad suuport. Negative to what you might here some other places, the JDM Rad support is not the magic "fix" to the hood install problem.

Let me know if you have any more questions

schwanginpt - sorry for the confusion, but my 88 crx si has this large piece of metal which is behind the bumper cover. i belive this is the bumper ( 5 mile/hr bumper ). i hear that this large support needs to be removed or cut. i guess my question is, can it simply be unbolted or does it have to be cut?

Thanks,
james

no problem man. that is the bumper support. USDM Cars have it, and JDM cars do not. its like 4 or 6 bolts to get to it, and that will come off. The JDM bumper will bolt to the front crossmember now, and not to the bumper support. make sense?

schwang, do your corner lights rub a little against the headlamps? this is how mine are, with the usdm corners against the sir headlamps. it's nothing major, and looks fine, but just wondering.

yup mine do that. the screw in and slide on fine, but they are really close or touching the headlight.

i havent tried a set of JDM corners to see if fit is different.

Learned something very interesting today: EF7s and EF6s used the EF8 style front end too. And when you perform the Front End Conversion using an EF7 or EF6 Front End all you need is the center rad support to properly bolt the hood. No cutting necessary, bolts on just like the "Urban Legend" suggests...

The EF8 Rad support is the one to avoid as we already know.

Reason: EF8 Bulkhead is longer than the EF7/EF6 (and the USDM). I will attach pics shortly showing this...

If you don't believe me, ask my buddy at www.jdmsource.ca! I did the conversion for his car about a week ago! Imagine my dismay after buying the EF8 Front Bulkhead in order to perform my conversion and have passed up the EF7 Front Bulkhead (Damn, my picky-ness!) only to install it 2 weeks later on his CRX without having to modify a damned thing!!!!! Grrrr!

Just a little FYI.

Andy

And, yes, even the JDM corners mount VERY close/touching the headlight. I think its intentional -- to give illusion of a one-piece headlight.

No it won't fit properly for a CRX. The Civic has a filler plate the CRX doesn't have. Thats why it will fit the Civic better with USDM headlights. The slope of the hood (in between the headlights) is shorter, and therefore the same area on the bumper needs to be higher. Also, because the JDM SiR headlights are longer, the middle piece on the bumper that meets the hood will be shorter than the same section on the USDM hood. It will look funny.
