im not new to this site but i am a new member so ill post here, anyways i have an 88 civic hatchback its stock right now, but im planning on a swap real soon, i want to go sohc since im on a small budget, but im trying to decide on which motor i actually want, my buddy has a 91 civic four door with a d16y8 that isnt even hooked up correctly, and the vtec does not work, and its still a pretty quick little four door for only having intake and exhuast, but then ive read about the d15b vtec and ive been told that its got a better cam. i guess what im trying to get at is which motor would be best, and are there after market parts to support the d15b vtec? any info would be great!

Ok... My own personal experience of the D15B VTEC (just swapped it in a week or so ago)...
I honestly LOVE it so far... Once I figured out how to make VTEC work (oil pressure was too high I assume, too much oil), and when I get it on it in high RPMs its quick! Definately a better engine in the high RPM range than the D16A6 (stock CRX Si engine)... It just seems to love the high RPMs too, and revs oh so nicely... No hesitation or anything... And it idles so smooth... The negatives... Now the downside as JDMEFSiR pointed out, this is a 1.5 liter engine, as opposed to my old engine that was a 1.6, so there is a little bit less low end torque on this car... And I can most definately feel the difference! So to keep up in traffic, I have to rev the engine higher than normal... This isnt too much of a problem for me tho... Conclusion is, would I do it all over again? Yea, I probably would... Its definately worth what I put into it, $1200, countless hours of research, and the week actually installing the engine and going without a car for that week... Its definately nice... The best part about it is, I have more power, and with the amount of stuff I replaced, I should be good for another 60k miles atleast without any problems... I hope anyways, but u never know, but having a newer engine and new shit replaced does give u sense of security... Now the whole D15B vs D16Y8... I dunno... The Y8 is a newer engine coming from a 96+ car... So less miles is a probability... Plus its a domestic engine, so parts arent a problem... The D15B does have alot in common with the D16Z6, but it also has its own part numbers that would be impossible to find in the U.S... If I could find one cheap, I probably would go with the Y8 and an OBD1 setup...

Thanks...
And I am in the process of making a write up, basically highlighting the differences of this swap from the Z6 swaps that are pretty documented... But this is for an Si, so a DX will be slightly different...

y8 Would be the best choice.. a couple of little inexpensive tricks would make u go fast.. upgrade ur cam for a better intake lift a high rpms..complete msd system and a chipped computer with the JUn program and ur good to go ready to kick some SI ASSES

Uh... This post is over a year old bro...... BTW, just about anything that you can do to the Y8, you can do to the D15B... Specially the things you listed: Cam, MSD ign., chipped ECU with a JUN program, ect...
The only real downside to the D15B is its displacement... But not really that big of a deal when your swapping it into a light car anyways...
