Tranny rebuild starts tomorrow !!!

Well, I am now officially on vacation and have a week to finish 2 projects in time for the BBQ. One is the tranny rebuild. Just so you guys know, a complete set of sleeve sets (synchro sets) costs ~$600 from Len at Baranco Acura. I called him last when ordering them last week, and he had the lowest price. And they were at my doorstep in a few days.

So, what I should have done by the end of the week is an ITR tranny w/ all new sleeve sets, a CTR LSD and a new 4.785 JDM ITR final drive. No more peg-leg burnouts or loss of traction in corners. I'll start taking pictures tomorrow once I get started and do a mini how-to. Although I STRONGLY recommend that you do 1 of 2 things before starting this. Get a Helms OR find someone who has experience with this. I have a Helms, and since this is my first experience with trannies I will be going slow and double-checking all clearances. Wish me luck, I'll be posting again soon.

-Ken

I will have some pics and driving impressions later tonight (like early morning) when I pick it up. My friend and I did final assembly at his house in Spring Hill (about 30 minutes away from me), and the first attempt at reassembly failed somewhat. That was last week. My friend Drew has done a few rebuilds, all yielding perfect results, this was my first attempt.

As luck would have it, when we tried to put the case back together, it was EXTREMELY difficult to seal together. After numerous attempts we did get it to go. However, it was very hard to turn the mainshaft with our hands. We figured that all new sleeves, gears, etc.....it wasn't broken in. (Wishful thinking )Started the car and there was this loud ticking coming from the bellhousing; car would engage 1-5 and reverse, but was reluctant to let go of Reverse.

Fast forward to Sunday. Case open, and the washer with the tang on the top of the mainshaft was bent down.... A LOT. Turns out it did not go into the slot meant for it in the case. Result: I toasted and fused together a brand new 5-R synchro sleeve set, put a nice color band on the mainshaft from the intense heat, and had to bum some extra parts from Drew. Mind this, this damage was caused in less than 15 minutes of IDLING !!!! Thankfully I didn't take it home. Oh yeah, the tranny case by the MS was hot as fawk.

I will post some pics tonight of the parts used in this endeavor after I drive her home.

OK, tranny has been completed and installed. I will post some pics later tomorrow.

Mods: New Synchro sleeve sets, JDM ITR LSD, JDM ITR 4.785 FD.

Driving impressions: It's not as drastic a change as I thought that it would be, just better in all areas except high speed driving. I haven't really done any hard accelerations (read racing) yet, but it pulls and builds up speed quicker than before. Revolutions have increased about 300-400 rpms for each mph. So before when I was doing 60mph, it was around 3000. Now it is about 3400rpm. The LSD is great, it is a unique feeling having the car pull you through a corner when in the gas, instead of losing grip on the inside wheel like before. The shifter slides into the next gear like a knife rowing through warm butter. At cruising speeds the revs are higher than before, VTEC is set at 5300, so anything over 90mph is in VTEC. When the Stage 3 cams are installed I can raise VTEC to ~6000rpm, so that will take care of itself. Overall it was a worthwhile upgrade and a learning experience for myself.

Nah, the FD shouldn't change, it's the cusco MZ 1.5 LSD, or the Cusco RS 1 LSD. 4.40 + LSD =

Sorry man, I was real tired this AM after working an overnight. But Cusco DOES make a Final Drive that kicks everyone else's ass !!!

As for LSD I would just recommend a Quaife.
