like someone keeps a thermometer under their hood, and pulls over to check it from time to time...
Excuse the snap. I tend to be quick-witted. Header wrap is mainly used as a safety precaution around headers for nearby lines and hoses, or for a vehicle that has the header REALLY close to the radiator, like a swapped EGhatch w/ a long-primary race header. You can do this if you want, and it may help in underhood temps, but I don't think you will notice any driving differance.

Your question really belongs in the s2000 forum on here, and should really be "what are the gains, if any, of running an aftermarket header."
What you are failing to realize, is that aftermarket headers DO add power. They don't do much for peak power, but they modify the powerband in order to make use of the available power. Heat wrapping a stock header is like wearing a condom with your wife when she's on birth control. The stock heat shield does a fine job, and there is no worry of having the wrap retain moisture and crack the header. I also don't think you know what you were getting at with your statement about reducing the temp. from the exhaust ports. The motor is running at the same temp. regardless. There is nothing you can do to cool it down that has anything to do with exhaust. You need to upgrade your cooling system to reduce operating temps. It only reduces underhood, and it's at a cost.

Most headers and exhaust systems will not give any significant peak power gains, just reduces weight and can apply the power lower or higher in the rev range. Heat wrap isnt going to do much, in most cases you'd use the header wrap to cool the engine bay temps which would also decrease the intake air temperature. But that is in extreme cases when the intake would be near the source of heat.

Well, heat wrap **ORIGINALY** was intended to keep the heat in the tubing, because when the exhaust gasses are kept at higher temperatures, they escape into the cooler atmosphere around them faster, since a gas with high energy has high energy
... Translating into more horsepower. The first guys who used it were mostly stock car racers and early trans am racing, then the hot rod guys started using it. Just to give you an example of it being put to propper use, when you see a hoodless hot rod, with the headers heat wrapped, in that situation underhood temperature is non existent.Heat wrapping can risk cracking as mentioned, so you could do it if you plan to replace yours, since if you crack it, it doesn't matter much |
