how-to:nrg quick release for 96-00 civic

this is going to be my how-to on installing a nrg quick release onto an 96-00 civic. its pretty my an easy job but getting the worn to work takes some know how. so with out further adue lets go.

first things first. kiss your old steering wheels good bye. also your going to have to unplug the battery just so the air bag will be powerless (it wont blow up on you when you unpluging it). and since your removing the steering wheel make sure that your wheels are straight.....so its easier to line every thing up later

next step is to remove the main screw that hold the airbag onto the steering wheel. your going to need a phillips and a star. (i dont remember the size...sorry)

step three is to go ahead and unplug the main plug of the sts unit...your going to have to remove it from the plastic and pull it down, the collor on the out side sides up like so.

step four is a lil fun. you going to unplug some of the ground wire for the horn and whatnot.

step five. take out the air bag and put it into a safe location

you now have the hub showing.....take the wrench and a breaker bar and just go to town, will making sure that your steering wheel stays straight. also it helps if a friend is there to help/hold.

once you get the nut off just pull toward you......moving it a lil left to rigth helped me.....and i really mean a lil. now that you have it off go ahead and remove the srs unit....again this is going to have to be unpluged.

once the old steering wheel is off your going to find another srs unit....remove that also

now that all the old stuff is off lets start putting new stuff. woot!!! start with the short hub. on the nrg hub there is a dot that points the the up postion. make sure thats up. screw the bolt back onto the hub, make sure its tight.now wire the quick release to the hub.

next step is to connect the other side of the quick release to the steering wheel...connect the yellow (power) to the buton and make sure the ground is also grouned on the buttoned......it will help later. i used the little metal clip that is poking out of the horn. we just took some spare wire and rapped one end to the clip and on to the other connection...so far it works fine.

now force the button onto the center of the steering wheel.....and your really going to force it on there.

now onto the horn...under the steering colum (were you unpluged the srs) your going to see a grey connector that looks like so.

take a small speaker wire and stick it into the middle hole.

run that wire threw the colum and connect it onto the back of the white platic....

^^^ its the red wire that is running all weird....lol

if its all done right drive down the road honking because your done.

I'd recommend NEVER setting an airbag face down. If it was (miraculously somehow) to deploy it'll shoot itself into the air and possibly hurt someone. Set it face up so if it does deploy it'll stay stationary.

Now onto the rest of your interior!

No offense, but something about that horn wire makes it seem like a hack job(even if that's the steering hub instructions, it doesn't seem right). I would think there should be some sort of connection that should be made(like a terminal or something...)

no there is nothing for the horn.....you can look at the weaksause.com forum site and they suggested useing a pen clip....

and you are right it was a hack job.....its going to be cleaned up but this is the best way to show you what to do....imo

hmmm....one would think that the makers of these hubs and steering wheels would have some way of using the horn without having the wire set up like that(or without the use of a pen clip)

according to the honda service manual, you should wait, a minimum of 3 minutes before messing with the airbag or srs units. they can still go off if bumped.

Ok.. i was installing, Or atleast planning on installing, my short hub and quik release until i ran into a little problem... i saw this write up and thought it looked pretty easy.. based on the fact my car came wit an aftermarket steering wheel i didnt have to wory about the air bag and what not... but instead. i ran into another problem... after i removed my steering wheel (pilot brand) i removed the little metal hub and instead of it just being the long post or watever u wanna call it for the hub to slide over... there was another piece of metal in the way... so it makes the stud too short for the hub... i dont know where it came from but basically its there and i have no idea how too remove it... neone know wat im talking about? im gonna try to get some pics later today... but the feed back if neone experienced the same would help.... thanks jdmu

But judging by the way they tune up their performance cars, it’s safe to say that Japanese bathroom floors are clean because people over there pay attention to detail. They stand close. They keep things clean. Be like Japanese people, because I’m sick of dragging my boot cuts through your piss.

This doesn't make sense.. the pics help out but it just stops with that wire loose there.. i have the same setup but with a nardi wheel and till this day i still don't have a damn horn.. the personal and nardi wheel horns have one connection on the horn button only.. where does that red wire end up.. u cant run it through the hole on the hub cause everytime you turn u'll wind that thing up around the column.. im confused and i need a horn.. post pics of how u ran and connected the wires plz..
