DIY PLOISHING HEADLIGHTS

POLISHING*
to begin sorry for the crappy cell phone pics but thought id share anyways.

youll need
600 grit sandpaper
1500 grit
Painters tape
3m rubbing compound
terry clothes
meguirs plastx

first off youll want to tape off the surrounding area just in case you go a little crazy and accidently sand your fender or bumper.

then youll want to use the 600 grit to sand it down till it starts looking hazy. and get rid of any scratches in the process. youll want to do it from left to right back and forth across the whole thing

next rub it down with the 1500. do the same as the 600

next get a terry cloth and add some rubbing compound to start getting the scratches from the sandpaper off.

next use some meguirs plastx to polish them up and get that nice shine. apply with terry cloth just like wax

heres the final product

600 grit is too low for what your doing; thats what we use for final prep before a paintjob.. you should of started with 1500 and then gone up to 2000 grit. going below 800 is just ruining the texture of the plastic headlights. polishing by hand is fine but the finishing product will start to show with the sun and rainy leaving it faded sooner than you think. i did the same thing with my rear taillights and it starts to show the fading cuz i didnt have a polisher to use. so i finally took my car in to my body class to get access to the polisher and did it the more precise way. you can always wetsand them with 800 and clear coat those headlights to really make them last.

i agree. i wouldnt use lower then 1500/2000 wet. with the 600 you are taking the protective coat the head lights have and will fade and look worse unless you polish them all the time.. good DIY though they look alot better then before.

+1 for the clear coat after, it's the only way to really make this last a long time.
