Need New Compact Flash Card

Ok I need to upgrade to a larger compact flash card for my Nikon D70. I am going to get a 2GB cause I am filling my 512MB up to fast and dont want to upgrade again for a long time, not until I upgrade camera's really.

So I have come to conclusions from looking around that Lexar Media and SANdisk are really the best ones.

Now since the D70 is like a year old so does it really have the capability to take advantage of the 133x write speed of the extreme III by sandisk or am I better off saving my money and buying a lexar professional 80x card.

Here are a couple I am looking at:

Lexar Professional

SanDisk Extreme III

or should I bid on this low priced Sandisk ultra II 4gb card

i wouldnt go too big of a mem card... id suggest getting something like this...
http://cgi.ebay.com/Portable-USB-Dig...QQcmdZViewItem
i mainly only use 2 1gb cards... once i fill one of them up, i swap cards and then the one thats full, i upload the pix to one of these things(not this exact one) and then i'll format that card and do the same when the other card gets full

im just saying not to go too big... a 1 gig card for me only holds a lil more then a 100pix cuz im constantly shooting raw... it does sometimes fill up rather quick where a 2 gig card would be nice so i wouldnt have to stop shooting sometimes... its when you get into the 4,6,8 gig cards its a lil excessive and i dont think its really worth the money... and lets say your shooting one day, your card is half full and for some reason the card goes bad... so with a 1 gig card, id be losing 50 pix rather then 100 on a 2gb and so on... thats just my thought... others may think different

I ended up buying 2 1gb cards for less than a 2gb card then I will always have a card in the case if i forget one sometime.

I have 2 - 1GB cards and a 2GB card, all Lexar 80x Professional. They are always right on with continuous shooting and I've always had good experiences with them.

I just picked up the 2GB card a few weeks ago, it was about $250 but with a $40 rebate. I had $140 in Ritz Camera gift cards from Christmas so I was only out about $70 for the 2GB. With 4GB, even in RAW, I have capacity of about 800 pictures.

In JPEG fine I can hold about 1800. You really can't go wrong with the Ultra II/III or Lexar Pro.

Yea, I definitely agree with Digital. He actually helped me in picking out a good flash card for my new cam. I got a Sandisk Extreme III 1GB Compact Flash card (Sandisk had a $20 rebate, so it only cost as much as the regular Compact Flash card) & it's great for my D70s. I haven't tried shooting in raw yet, but I can shoot almost 300 pictures in JPEG Fine.

off topic:

once you shoot in raw, you'll never go back.

Colts, sorry bud but I'm hijacking since you already have your info and card.

JPEG FINE:

Now, this picture came out really nice, but when you see what it looks like in RAW:

Granted there are major differences in lighting, but I used the same post process on both pictures and the differences speak for themselves. Colts is actually the one that told me about the differences in RAW and now I'll never go back.

D70 shows 358 RAW available on empty 2GB card.

Wow...that is a huge difference, the clarity is ridiculous in the 2nd shot. You can see every detail. Maybe I will start shooting in RAW just to test things out. What exactly are the differences between JPEG Fine & RAW aside from compression...?

And this is off topic too...Lol, but...when I'm shooting in JPEG Fine mode, everything looks fine until I resize my photos & then JPEG compression owns the hell out of me. Especially with portrait shots of people. Compression is always visible with the bokeh. Any way around this Digital...?

What are your settings? Are you saving as or saving for web?

Save As I usually don't do less than 10 (Maximum)
Save for Web I usually do Optimized 70 for JPEG, 85 for RAW/NEF.

Just try it out, but definately make it a goal to shoot only RAW... adjustments and fine tuning image is soooo much easier.

Also, are you shooting in sRGB or adobe RGB?

I usually save at Maximum 10 or 12 & I've never saved for the web yet (didn't really know there was a difference...Lol). And I usually have it set to sRGB.

And from now on, I'll start shooting in RAW and check things out.

sounds good... i just switched over to adobe RGB because i heard that most pro printers prefer it in that space, and since i'm starting to shoot for sites and magazines i want to make sure i dont eff that up. i havent noticed a difference in picture quality or appearance at all...

it did change my file names from "DSC_0001" to "_DSC0001" though... weird.

currently just NWP4LIFE.com and my site, but I'm trying to get into Honda Tuning through my best friend who is on the editorial staff.

I have a day job/career this would just be a way to get paid for doing something I do for free anyway.

Good luck dude, your work is well worth a cover.

Sorry to jack this thread... But digital horizon, i'm having trouble downloading my raw format pictures. I just shot some pics of the Movie studio lot but I cant load them on to the computer. Do I open them in Photoshop or do I have to format the pic. I'm a little baffled on this...
