The flash part shouldn't affect the focus, since you probably have an assist light to help the focus process, unless you were using MF.
As for flash... eh... could have just gone with the good ol' fashioned long exposure for some natural looking shots ![]() I understand when there's a "model" involved that there's no way they can stand still or hold whatever pose it is for a few seconds without some slight movement, but those shots actually didn't come out too bad.

Judging by the setup shots, you're not using off-shoe extensions or Pocket Wizards, so I can only assume you're using Nikon's infrared system (CLS). What settings did you plug in for the commander, Manual or TTL?
Just FYI, you never use TTL on off-shoe setups. The metering turns out fine, but there is no way for the camera to transmit distance data for the flash's zoom settings, so it's almost always a stop or two off. If you haven't played with manual flash settings, now is the time to do so. Once you start to get a feel for it, lit shots become surprisingly easy. Lastly, you're creating really strong shadows. I highly recommend using at least two strobes when taking night shots. Doing so allows for more intricate setups, minimizing the appearance shadows and allowing for much better lighting all around. You can even buy umbrellas (I recommend shoot-through ones) and/or reflectors to soften the lighting. Or, maybe you might want to play with shadows even more, and use them as a sort of motif for your shots. They may even become the subject for some of them.
