Official EM1 Hotnes Rebuild Thread

**UPDATED PROGRESS AND PICS ON PAGE 9! CHECK IT OUT!**

The Car/Motor is going through its SECOND Rebuild so I have decided to document everything for shits and giggles (and because I have no job right now and am EXTREMELY bored ) For the people that do not know the History of this Car, I will briefly explain it to you. Here goes . . . . .

I purchased the Car in March of 2004. The Car was pretty clean minus a few dings, dents, unnoticebale scratches, and it was missing the beloved Si Front Lip. It was also rocking some disgusting 17" White Motegi MR7's, with JDM CTR Center Caps. The first disaster happened when I went to have my Timing Belt and Water Pump replaced at 90K Miles. I was low on Money and my Brother-in-Law did the work for me at a Shop He was working at. I paid the $200 and left. About 2 Weeks later I was going to Work and when I entered the Parking lot, i noticed that my Power Steering was no longer working and that my Battery Light went on. I parked the Car, popped the Hood and to my astonishment saw that the PS and AC Belts had fallen off of the Crankshaft Pulley. I managed to slip the AC Belt back On and just cut the PS Pulley so it would not get tangled up. I did not know that that day my Car would fall Victim to a snapped Timing Belt. On the way back Home from Work, the Timing Belt snapped At this point I decided since the Motor was going to be fixed, I might as well replace EVERYTHING and fully Build it. I knew what I was looking for and went to Work. After 4 grueling Months the Car finally ran and 3 Months later Tuned and I ALMOST achieved my Goal of 200whp and150lbs/tq (191whp & 140lbs/tq)

The Car ran very well and I was happy with my accomplishments. Untill my Hondata started going haywire. Comes to find out, my Tune was corrupted and I needed to have it Re-Tuned due to the Shop having a Computer issue and losing only MY Tune . . . . . Car was re-Tuned and made 191whp and 148lbs/tq. The Car ran a tad bit better and I was happy I was finally done with the Motor . . . . . . . . .

Then comes the most recent tragedy. I was going up to Northern MA for my first Auto-X when something dreadful happened. The Car just died on me and Me, my Girlfriend and a few Friends were stuck in a Parking Lot for almost 100 Miles away from Home . . . with no idea what happened. Once we finally returned Home (due to the help of my good Friends Tow Truck hook-ups ) I managed to find out that several Teeth from the Timing Belt broke off and I again . . . . did some serious Damage. New Valves, Valve Guides, Head Gasket, Valve Seals, and timing Belt were purchased and I was off to work . . .for the SECOND time.

Once the Head came back from the Machine Shop I was off to work to get this thing started. We ran into several more problems (Car would not Start) and figured there could have been a problem with the Valve Lash. My Brother-in-Law came to the rescue again ( ) and said that the Timing was off when we KNEW the Timing was right. Me being the idiot I am and being very desperate, went ahead and worked on the Car with Him to fix the Timing issue . . . . which was NOT the issue. The real issue had been with the Valve Lash and from us cranking over the Motor so many times, caused MORE serious issues.

Right now the Head is BACK at the Machine Shop gettting inspected to see if there is massive damage to the Valves or not. If not, then they can be repaired. If they are, new ones will need to be sourced. This Car has caused several problems financely and emotionaly. Several Family Memeber and Friends would like me to just get rid of it and stop, but I can't. I must complete this Project that I have started. For others that do not know, the past couple of Months have been really hard. My Girlfriend and I were Pregnant and lost the Child due to a Miscarriage at about 2 Months into the Pregnancy. We have been VERY low on Cash and I just recently lost my job. The only support I have for my Car is my GF, a few Friends, ad the Forums. This Car WILL be Completed and absolutely NOTHING will stop me.

This is just ONE of the Valves that were damaged this time around. They have since been replaced with Supertech High Compression Flat Valves. Port Flow Maganese Bronze Valve Guides were also purchased along with an OEM Honda Headgasket, OEM Honda Timing Belt, and OEM Honda Valve Seals.

This is whats left of the Timing Belt. About 13 Teeth were Broken which MAY have caused the Valve Damage. I say MAY because we have yet to find out what relly happened. Several of the Valve Guides were damaged also along with a few that were actually melted. Did the Valve Guides go first causing the Valves to lock into place putting pressure on the Timing Belt? Or was the Timing Belt defective, on too tight/too lose? We do not know . . . . .

Since my Car is to expected to be down for the next 2-3 Weeks, I have agreed to get nasty with it and fix EVERYTHING that has been a problem, and make sure everything is perfect by my standards (I also have no Job and am EXTREMELY bored lol) I started out first by cleaning the living piss out of my Engine Bay and Painting all the little Scratches, Chips, ect. with OEM Touch-Up Paint. The results . . . . .You can eat a MEAL off my Engine Bay. The Motor is still pretty dirty but I haven't yet completed cleaning it.

As of now, the way the Car sits, is an image I hope to NEVER see again. Up on Jack Stands, parts all over the place, the obvious missing HEAD lol. Parts in the Trunk, Parts in the Car. Its a mess. But I have to keep my hopes high and aim for the best. I will not stop untill the project has been Completed.

hotness i feel for you bro.. truly do.. i myself havent been the luckiest between theft accidents not involving my car.. long stories.. and just all around bad luck my car remains stock with only the suspension setup complete and minor things like exedy stage 1 clutch, fidanza fly wheel, intake, etc.. b/s its an ls truth is i should have had my ls/vtec setup completed a year ago.. another long story.. i was aiming for 230 wheel.. bottom line is its the name of the game.. no ones build is easy unless you truly map out every aspect before hand which i and possibly yourself have not done.. with all of that being said.. (and really my last comment about my past issues)...

I have a current issue, and before i take my motor apart i want the opinion of the technical minded viewers including you hotness.. my car has been having tranny issues so i recently installed the clutch and fly wheel.. shortly after, (and i seriously doubt that it was related to the clutch issue please let me know if im wrong).. i experienced this strange issue in which i would press the throttle and get response but feel a choking feeling which disabled me from gaining RPM hense speed. IM LIKE WTF!!!.. turns out a timing belt issue, in my enraged state i pressed the accelerator all the way down wrecklessly.. my mechanic says its a miracle the car started, he also fixed it but didnt check valves and im not sure if he ran a compression test or not.. its an ls motor that i dont plan keeping but its my daily for now.. car doesnt smoke and i havent heard any strange raspiness as if there was valve damage.. but in the same breath im thinking about possibly opening the motor.. is this neccesary?

I donno man. I don't see how it would be a Timing Belt issue. If you had some serious Valve damage your car wouldn't run very well or at all. Thanks for the support bro

For me being in these forums and just being into my cars is what takes my mind off all of the problems i have...

Thanks again people. I used to work for CVS at the main Headquarters. Worked as a Help Desk Representative. It shouldn't be to hard to find a job. I went to College for Graphic Design so I am looking for a job now in that field. For now I'm doing Construction with my Father. The Timing Belt was just an OEM Honda Belt.

Today when I get Home from Work, I will be starting my Interior. Pics up later Tonight!
