First WRX clucth I need some help guys

O.K. I've done clutchs and trans jobs before but never on a Subu. I've only done Honda , VW , Mazda , Chevy, and basicly any import and euro you can name. But I've never done one on a Subu. let alone a WRX. Well a kid owning a WRX comes into my shop this week and says his clutch is slipping. The WRX is a 02' body style I believe it is a 02' and only has 12,000 miles on it. I use to work for a dealership and warned him any other clutch but stock will VOID his warranty. He said he checked with a dealer and the tech. their said it won't void his warranty if his trans goes up. The dealership I worked at if a trans went up in a new car thats under warranty and I saw it had a racing clutch in it the job was customer pay warranty wouldn't cover it. Well any way the kid orders a SPEC racing stage #2 clutch kit ande I have to put it in tomorrow.

I checked with my friend thats a subu. tech. and asked him if there's anything special I need to know before I puul the trans ( i.e. any special tools or steps needed to take it out ) he said no it's just like doing any other 5 speed trans. Well my boss looked on the internet and said that there's a special plasic ring or something for the shift fork that if not removed right it will mess the trans up. Is this so ? Is there anything I need to be aware of or need to know when I do this. This is the first WRX clutch job the shop I work at has seen ( I work at a performance shop but it's a very new shop ). Thanks for your guys help.

Well...tell that kid to bring the WRX back to the dealer first!
there is a TSB regarding that issue.
Subarus had a problem the clutch slipping and most of the work was done under warranty.
I had it done twice and then my clutch did it again.
I have since had a ACT in there.
yes they are a pain in the ass to do.
front axles.
drive shaft
tranny sub frame.
once you get the bolts out of the trans, that clip he is talking about is for the shift fork, you have to pull it out in order to remove the trans.
I suggest you get All Data or a shop manual if you are venturing into the scooby world
Good luck!

Thanks for the link... Yea I told him to goto the dealer first and have it checked out but he refused so I guess it's on him. Thanks again.

o.k. I'm in the middle of taking uut the trans.... everythings out but the trans feels like the throw out bearing it stuck on the pressure plate. I'm looking at the new clutch from spec and the throw out bearing clips into the pressure plate like I need to press on the the pressure plate to unlock the trans and input shaft. The directions are for a 98 style 2.5 RS and I'm working on a 03' WRX. Normally theres a access panel to get to th4e pressure plate to pry on the release it but I seen none. What am I doing wrong Thanks

A clutch for an RS won't work in a WRX, and neither will the instructions. One is a "push type" clutch and the other is a "pull". I forget which is which, but they are different.
