The importance of suspension in Drag Racing...

Most people think "How important is sus, in Drag Racing"? Alot of people don't think it is very important... They are wrong!

When I first got my car it had Skukworks Coilover sleeves and stock shocks. It was a tad bouncy but rather stiff, I suppose.

I ran it at the track and ran 2.2-2.3 60ft's... not very impressive. I did a little tuning ... such as raising the height in the rear and lowering the front just a bit. This alone helped alot. I was now getting consistant 2.1's all day.

Recently, I have purchased Buddy Club Race Spec dampers..... just a flashy word for kick ass coilovers!

Anyhow, these are super adjustable... you can adjust the dampening, rod length and height. I have the rear raised up and very stiff, the front I dropped a bit and left a little softer. Now the car bites into the ground like never before. I now pull of constant 2.0's all day on street tires. Soon, I will experience what it's like with slicks.

Now keep in mind, these improvements were ONLY caused by tuning the suspension... no other mods. If you go to the track alot, you know what they say.... "A tenth in your 60, is like 2 tenths in your 1/4" That is just how valuable the proper suspension is.

This is just regarding Drag Racing..... Now, autocross, road racing..... Suspension is probably, THE most important tool. Although, I plan to get into road racing in the near future... I am not qualified to write an article on it.

If YOU are qualified, feel free to express yourself, via an article or a post.

Thanks,
Miguel

Miguel,

Some other ideas to consider for improving your times:

1) Cusco Super Single Clutch/Flywheel
2) Advan A-048 SS compound tires

I believe these are components that Dee (drealgsr) considers to be crucial to his success...

Nice Post

Maybe you guys can give me some quick advice. Here is my setup suspension wise on my 2000 Si:

Ground Control Coilovers (400R/350F)
Tokico Illuminas (adjustable)
16" Kuhmo 712's

What kind of adjustments should I make before I go to the drag strip. Miguel, from your post your saying I should raise up my rear a little, and lower my front? I have my rear shocks set to max stiffness for daily driving. Should I set the front to max soft or somehwere in between for the strip? Also, what do you think a good tire pressure front and rear would be for me to start with?

I personally raise the rear up as high as it goes and turn my shocks to rock hard and raise tire pressure in the rear tires, as for the front, lower tire pressure, lower car and have the dampening set just about in the middle. Truely a difference in 60's.
