turbo MKIIIs came with the 7M-GTE, which is a 3.0lt straight6 with a single turbo. JDM versions had an option between the 7M-GTE or the 1JZ-GTE, which was a 2.5lt twin turbo engine; a prerunner to the 2JZ.

Turbo MKIVs had the 2JZ-GTE, which was twin turboed.

Differences between the three engines...

7Ms were decent engines that were solid, but they had some issues. A common problem was headgasket failure on boosted motors. They churned out 232hp stock, allegedly.

1JZs are VERY close to the 2JZ cousins. They are a shorter stroke, smaller piston motor, and they rev higher than 2JZs. They are very strong and sturdy, but I can't quote any performance numbers. They are a JDM-only motor.

2JZs are the crown on Toyota's head. These are iron-block, aluminum-head titans of import performance engines. Nearly indestructable in GTE form, and capable of handling over 1,000hp on stock internals, but those are dyno queens. Most street-driven guys make 700whp daily. Alot of Supra owners make 500+ on stock twin turbos.

well the twin turbos are basically a sequential system meaning one turbo spools from the beggining to the middle and then the other picks up and finishes it.The reason as to y a lot of the Supra,RX-7 third gen owners convert to single turbo is to reduce the lag of the sequential system. But u can still make a lot of power with both systems whether it's single or twin just depends on the owners likes i guess you could say.

I couldn't put it better myself. It depends on the owner as to why they would go single, or go with larger twins or stay with the stockers.

and going single doesnt always reduce lag.. just depends on the size of the single and whether its a journal bearing turbo or ball bearing.. also the a/r has a little to do with it as well.. but generally the larger the turbo the more lag... i personally prefer my 67mm single... great spool and very streetable as opposed to like t-78 which spikes really hard when boost comes on.. but to each their own
