1971 Toyota Corolla Coupe Fastback

1971 Toyota Corolla Coupe Fast Back TE27

I just wanted to share another car with the JDMU.
This car also belongs to my cousin who did the 1974 Datsun 260Z Restoration.

This car was purchased brand new in 1971 by his dad. It has stayed in the
family ever since. For most of its life it has remained stock. Since then
mild modifications have been installed.

1971 was the 1st year of 2nd generation of Toyota Corolla.
In Japan it was called the Mango and was made from 71 to 74.
This was the last year that they made metal trim, metal emblems and a metal grill.

What makes this car rare is that its a 1971 Toyota Corolla Coupe Fast Back.
Most Corollas of the time were 2-door Sedans. While he did manage to find a 1972
version <link will be here>, he has yet to find another 1971 Coupe.

Modifications:
He has replaced the 4-speed transmission with a 5-speed.
JDM Chin Spoiler
SR5 Cluster first made available in Japan, then brought to the US.
(the US version had wood grain trim, the wood grain has been removed to appear just like the Japan Levin Corolla)
JDM TRD 5-speed Shift knob
JDM Turn Signals

My Uncle pictured driving the car when it was brand new.

These pictures are from 8 years ago, the car has been modified since.

The paint is new in these pictures, however its not the correct color code, its too blue pictured here

You can see the US turn signals here. Later I will post pictures of the JDM versions

The wheels have since been replaced, pictures later.

The trunk is a common place on these cars to rust out. This trunk has been repaired.

Here you get a good look at the metal grill. They stopped putting metal grills on the Corollas after this 1971 year model.

Completely Stock 1600 cc, 102 HP, 2TC, engine.

These are before shots.

Pictures of the upgrades will be posted later.

The original gauges 2 large round circles.

Here the SR5 Cluster is installed. The car still has the 4-speed in it here.

The SR5 Cluster was a nice addition to the car, bringing a factory tach.

Here the car is being retired from being a daily driver. It has been issued 1971 plates, and
given some wider tires and a new set of rims. It has also been painted the correct color in this picture.

Current Pictures of the TE27 Mango

These pictures were taken recently. They show off the parts mentioned in the above post. Eventually the car will be lowed an inch, and maybe have wider tires strapped underneath. It would be nice to find some SR5 Fender flares as well.

The firewall showing the TE27 Stamp and the 18,000 Corolla of that year.

The Engine plate showing the engine package of this Corolla.

<name I forgot> caurberator and electronic ignition installed.

Doug Thorely Header

Cusco strut tower bar.

JDM Center Console with the cut out for the Factory Air Conditioning and
clock option not yet installed. Also shown is the TRD 5-speed shift knob
perched atop the 5-speed tranny.

Here is a full view of the SR5 cluster. The factory tach is a very nice
upgrade. I like this 3 gauge layout much better than the original two
from the factory.

Ah, the JDM chin spoiler. I was amazed at what that added to the car.

This time my cousin painted the car and did the body work himself.
The paint is now the correct original factory color.

This is a custom exhaust built by my cousin.
This piping is bigger than the original.

The original trunk lid was just too rusted and repaired incorrectly.
So this is a new trunk lid that was free of rust.

A nice shot of the wheels.

The other side, no passenger side mirror option here.

Here you can see the JDM turn signals. The corners are clear.
This was not an option in the US.

A nice angle to show off the chin spoiler.

This car is so small. But its rear wheel drive which is very nice. He is going
to keep this one looking like this, a slightly modified stock variant. But I think
he has plans to turn his recently purchased 1972 Corolla <link is here>
into a Corolla replica race car, period correct of course. Possibly with a larger
motor swapped in.

Thanks! My cousin is always looking for more parts. These cars are so rare. When he finds one, he usually just buys the whole car instead of just parts.

OemEg8-Do you have a te72 or a te27? I'm personally not up on Toyota motors, so I don't know if that is just a typo, or if that is an actual motor.

I hope you guys check back for the updated pictures. I was really surprised to see members post before I had a chance to put up the second run of pictures. I need a faster internet connection.

Thanks. What motor is the 1.8? How much motor work invested? Post up some pictures too. What was the donor car for the 5-lug conversion?
